Santa Maria Church (Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption)
About
A UNESCO World Heritage church perched on a hill like a fortress! Santa Maria Church, now the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, is one of only four Baroque Churches of the Philippines on the UNESCO list, inscribed in 1993. Augustinian friars began it in 1765 in massive red brick and mortar, and its separate bell tower, added in 1810, leans slightly to this day. Climb up from the town to stand before the thick, buttressed walls, then walk around for views over the Ilocos countryside. Entry is free, so pair it with Pinsal Falls in the same town or a heritage day in Vigan. Dress modestly and keep quiet during Mass!
