Callao Cave

About

Callao Cave is Cagayan's best-known natural attraction and a real history spot. Climb 184 concrete steps to the entrance, then walk through seven limestone chambers. The biggest chamber is a natural chapel, with a rock altar lit by sunlight streaming through holes in the roof. In 2007, scientists found fossils here later named Homo luzonensis, a human species that lived about 50,000 to 67,000 years ago. Hard hats are now required inside. After the cave, take a boat on the Pinacanauan River for a swim or a riverside picnic. It is only about 24 km from Tuguegarao, so pair it with a bowl of pancit batil patong in the city.
