Buruwisan Falls (Mount Romelo)

No car needed

About

Hike through the Sierra Madre foothills and get rewarded with a waterfall party! Buruwisan Falls is the star of Mount Romelo, dropping about 50 meters into a big natural pool hidden in a forest gorge. The trail is a beginner climb over a low hill, so you can focus on the fun: river crossings, forest shade and a swim under the falls. Camp on the plateau above and hop to the other cascades nearby, like Lanzones, Sampaloc and Batya-Batya Falls. Register at Barangay Macatad and hire a local guide. Go in the dry months, wear shoes with strong grip, and pack a dry bag, because the clay trail turns into slippery mud after rain.

Know before you go

Do not go near the gorge or river crossings after heavy rain; water levels rise fast.

Test old guide ropes before putting your weight on them on the steep descent.

Wear shoes with strong grip and use trekking poles; the clay mud is very slippery.

Limited parking near the Macatad jump-off area; arrange with the barangay or registration staff.

Registration ₱50 per person; toilet and bath fee ₱20; guide about ₱600 per group of up to 7 for a day hike, up to ₱1,500 for an overnight multi-falls trip (Lakbay Pinas Mt. Romelo guide, June 2026).

Go in the dry months, wear shoes with strong grip, and pack a dry bag, because the clay trail turns into slippery mud after rain.

FAQ

Is Mount Romelo good for first-time hikers?

Yes. It is a minor climb with no technical gear needed, but the mud and the steep descent to the falls can be tiring.

Do I need a guide?

Guides are available at the registration area and are strongly recommended because the trail has forks and the gorge is confusing.

How long is the hike to Buruwisan Falls?

Most groups reach the falls in about 2-4 hours from the Macatad jump-off, depending on pace and mud.

Can I camp overnight?

Yes. There is a campsite on the plateau above Buruwisan Falls, and overnight trips can cover more waterfalls.
