Buscalan Village (Apo Whang-od)
About
Buscalan is the mountain village of Apo Whang-od, the Kalinga mambabatok who became Vogue Philippines' cover star in April 2023. Visitors make the long trip to get a hand-tapped batok tattoo, done with charcoal ink and a citrus thorn, from Whang-od's bloodline apprentices like her grandniece Grace Palicas. The village itself is part of the reward: rice terraces, strong local coffee and mountain views. Getting there takes 12 to 15 hours from Manila via Baguio and Bontoc, then a guided mountain trek of about 1.5 to 2 hours. Stay overnight in a homestay, ask before photographing people, and bring cash.
