Top 10 Things to Do in Cebu

Millions of sardines moving like one giant silver cloud – and you don't even need a boat to see them! At Panagsama Beach in Moalboal, you swim a few meters out, the reef drops into deep blue, and there's the famous sardine run swirling right around you. Sea turtles often glide along the same wall, so keep your eyes open. Bring a mask and fins or join a guided snorkel, then stay for Panagsama's dive shops, chill bars and cafes. Go in the morning when the water is clearest and boats are fewer. Hardcore divers can add Pescador Island, Moalboal's top dive spot about 3 km offshore.

Cebu's ultimate barkada adventure! Badian canyoneering means strapping on a helmet and life vest, then trekking, floating, swimming and jumping your way down a turquoise river canyon, ending at the famous Kawasan Falls. Accredited guides lead the route, help you on every jump (all optional), and many bring a camera to capture the action. Expect a few hours in the water, cliff jumps of different heights, natural rock slides and lots of laughter. It's high-adrenaline but beginner-friendly, and you will leave with a camera roll full of epic jump shots. Best moment: a sunny dry-season morning, when the water glows bright blue.

Milky turquoise pools, cool spring water, and a 40-meter main drop – Kawasan is Cebu's most famous waterfall for a reason. It's a three-tier cascade in Badian, fed by a mountain spring that gives the water its unreal blue color. Ride a bamboo raft right under the main falls, swim in the basins, and eat at the riverside stalls after. Kawasan is also the grand finale of the Badian canyoneering trip, so expect excited groups jumping and sliding in from upriver. Arrive early in the morning, in the dry season, to get clear water and the pools before the crowds roll in. Sulit na side trip from Moalboal!

The spiritual heart of Cebu and the oldest church in the Philippines. Founded in 1565, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is home to the Santo Niño de Cebu, the image Magellan gave to Rajah Humabon's wife in 1521 and found again more than 40 years later during Legazpi's expedition. Devotees pack it daily, and the whole city celebrates during Sinulog every January. Watch candle vendors dance their prayers outside, visit the small museum, and walk over to Magellan's Cross next door. Go on a weekday morning for a calmer visit. A must on any Cebu heritage walk.

Wake up before sunrise for one of diving's rarest sights: thresher sharks with their long, whip-like tails, circling a reef just meters away from you. Monad Shoal near Malapascua is known as the only place in the world where threshers are seen regularly, as they come up at dawn to get cleaned by tiny wrasse fish. The top of the shoal sits around 20 to 24 meters deep, so you need to be a certified diver, and Advanced is recommended. Not certified yet? Malapascua's dive shops run courses, so you can learn and see them on the same trip. Stay a few nights and add Gato Island or the island's white beaches.

Summit na pang-beginner, view na pang-pro! Osmeña Peak in Mantalongon, Dalaguete is often called Cebu's highest peak, yet the hike from the jump-off takes only around 20-30 minutes. At the top, you get a wild landscape of jagged, pointed grassy hills that people compare to the Chocolate Hills, with the sea on both sides of Cebu on clear days. Sunrise is the favorite: start early, watch the sky light up, then enjoy the cool mountain air of Mantalongon, the 'Summer Capital of Cebu'. Hardcore hikers continue down to Kawasan Falls in a full-day traverse with a guide.

Bantayan's postcard beach, and parang Boracay noong araw. Kota Beach in Santa Fe has powdery white sand, shallow turquoise water and a sandbar that stretches out at low tide, with a small rock islet you can wade to. There are only a few cottages and a resort here, so the vibe is slow: sunbathe, swim, float and do absolutely nothing with the barkada. Time your visit with low tide to walk the sandbar, stay for the sunset, then head back to Santa Fe town for grilled seafood and Bantayan's famous dried fish as pasalubong. Go in the dry months for the calmest, clearest water.

The easiest beach-and-snorkel day from Metro Cebu. Bangkas leave from Mactan for the Olango island group, where marine sanctuaries like Hilutungan and Nalusuan have fish swarming around you in clear, shallow water. Then it's off to a sandbar island like Pandanon or Caohagan for a seafood barbecue lunch on the sand. Bring an underwater camera – the fish come close. Calm, fun and family friendly, it's ideal if you're staying in the city or at a Mactan resort. Go on a dry-season morning for the calmest water and best visibility. Tara, beach day with the barkada!

Maliit na isla, malaking show sa ilalim! Pescador Island sits about 3 km off Moalboal, and it's the most common dive trip in town. A reef wraps around the whole island, shallow near shore and then dropping off to more than 40 meters, so snorkelers float over corals while divers go deep along the walls. Expect turtles, sardine schools and lots of reef fish. Advanced divers can explore 'the Cathedral', an underwater cave. Most Moalboal island-hopping trips stop here, together with turtle spots and the famous sardine run at Panagsama. Go on a calm, sunny morning for the clearest water.

Ang sandbar na nagbabago ng hugis! Sumilon is a 24-hectare coral island off Oslob, and its famous white sandbar shifts shape and position depending on the season, set against clear blue water. It's also the first marine protected area in the Philippines, declared a sanctuary in 1974, so the reefs around it are worth a snorkel. Most visitors pair it with the Oslob whale sharks in the morning, then hop over for sun, swimming and photos. Day trips run by boat from the whale-shark area, while the island resort covers the rest of the island.
